Meta Descriptions, are they still necessary?

There is a lot of debate on this between SEOs. A meta description is written into your HTML code on each page to give a description of the content on the page for cataloging purposes.

The final answer on this is Yes! Granted, meta description may not play a roll when it come to SEO but they are still very important. A meta description is the text that shows within the result pages on a search query. This can be very useful from a marketing perspective. A compelling description can invite more visitors from the results page into your site. Search engines can read your page and assign a description if you don’t have one. But then you would be relying on a search algorithm to describe your page. I’ve seen examples where the navigation information was used as a search result description…not very compelling. Don’t trust an algorithm to choose the relevant convent for your site.
